Biodiversity in Sidmouth: "Is planting a million bulbs a 'good thing'?" ...a second take

Another view from another correspondent about
Futures Forum: Keith Owen Fund: one million bulbs: community planting: reports

My opinions on the planting of bulbs:
  • Yes, they do provide an early nectar source for insects, fresh vegetation for animals - but this should not occur anywhere where there may be the possibility of other native early nectar sources, due to competition.
  • They are not of the native variety.
  • The mass planting of any species should be avoided, for pest and disease issues.
  • The source of the Cornish daffodils: they are grown here which is good for disease - but I have not seen  that they are the native daffodil.
  • We are lacking in native daffodils in this area, why not plant some of those? (This may be happening but I have not seen report of it...)
  • May be overly attractive to insects, therefore avoiding other plants and leaving them un-pollinated, therefore unable to pass on their genes.
  • This project seems, rather, to provide a spectacle for human enjoyment and to ease planting.
  • Why not have planted a selection of bulbs rather than a mono-culture?  Cost? Should we not be enhancing the biodiversity? I think that this is what Keith Owen would have had in mind. Surely the money could have been spent to produce a spectacle which also had a greater benefit to the biodiversity of the area?
